Back in early 2016 when I first started doing concert photography, I was looking out for future bands I would like to cover and I came across the band Nothing But Thieves. I don’t remember exactly how I came across them, but I do remember pretty quickly deciding I wanted to go to their show here and take photos. I wasn’t able to score a photo pass so I was questioning whether or not I still wanted to go out. I remember I was having a pretty bad week and decided to say screw it and do something active to try and change that.
The Wrecks were the opening band that night and I was blown away. Their fast paced rock was just incredibly fun to listen to and ended up overshadowing Nothing But Thieves. I’ve been following them since and have twice gotten to see them again, once this past summer when they toured with All Time Low on their Last Young Renegade tour and then now on their first headlining tour last Saturday. It’s been a pleasure to see them go from a small venue like The Turf Club (where I saw them last year), to a few thousand person capacity venue like the Palace Theatre and now a kind of middle ground with the Garage, and see them completely kill it each time.
We got the usual favorites, “Favorite Liar,” “I Don’t Like You,” and “Turn It Up” Saturday, but the band threw in an incredible cover of Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” that I wasn’t expecting at all, but was my highlight of the show.
So take chances, say yes to things you’re not entirely sure of. You might end up discovering a new favorite.
