Twenty One Pilots are in the midst of a very very sold out tour in support of their latest record, Blurryface.  They dynamic duo stopped by the Open Air Theatre in San Diego for one hell of a show.  Seriously, one of the best I’ve seen.  Their festival antics already keep folks talking but it’s so nice to witness that same energy translate to a tour of their own.

They hit the stage to a sea of red lights and fog and immediately went into “Heavydirtysoul.”  The crowd chimed in just in time for the hook, “Gangsters don’t cry therefore, therefore I’m…” and then proceeded to lose their shit in time for the chorus.  They guys are intense, if nothing else.  Tyler Joseph flails his body all around the stage and drummer Josh Dun pounds his drums like a maniac.  With little to no downtime between songs, they went through a 26 song setlist in record time.

There wasn’t a single dull moment throughout the show either.  Half of it is due to Tyler jumping off of things or onto things and Josh having fun with his drums sticks and then literally drumming on the crowd.  The other half is definitely crowd participation.   They guys didn’t even have to ask the crowd to sing or liven up.  In a venue full of seats, not a single person was sitting in the entire theatre.  It’s so nice to see such a devoted crowd with so much love towards the duo and a band that reciprocates that very feeling.  I mean, the guys end the show with a very humble “We’re Twenty One Pilots and so are you.”  I can’t even! Besides, I was totally impressed by how quickly Tyler ran to the top of the venue and finished “Car Radio” from the roof of the concession stand completely unwinded.

After a jam-packed set the guys closed out the night with “Goner” and “Trees” as their encore.  It was beautiful.   If you ever get the chance to see Twenty One Pilots friends, do yourself a favor and DO NOT pass it up.
