Lydia’s second-studio album Illuminate is about to turn 6 years old and what better way to commemorate such an amazing album then to dedicate an entire spring tour to it. That’s right folks, from now until early April you have a chance to hear the record played in its entirety. If that isn’t enough they have Golden Sun and Saint Motel (H RV RD 3/11 – 4/05) as support.
I went out to the third date of the tour at The Glass House in Pomona. A rare rainy night for us out in Southern California but a perfect setting as any to hear Illuminate played in full. The night started off with Golden Sun that incidentally is made up by Jantzen, Chase, and Weston Meier who are currently playing with Lydia and did so on their tour with The Maine last year as well. Do yourself a favor and visit their bandcamp and pick up everything on it. You won’t regret it.
Saint Motel is a heck of a band and a force to be reckoned with on stage. These boys know how to put on a show -saxophone and all. There were quite a few Saint Motel fans in the audience and by the end of their performance there were plenty of new ones. I can’t wait to catch these guys live again.
Finally Lydia hit the stage as graceful as ever and jumped straight into Illuminate. The crowd was at its loudest when they played “Stay Awake” but was always ready to sing when singer Leighton Antelmen held the mic out. They did an incredible version of “All I See” that I hope they record someday because I loved it so much more than the original. I went into the show worried that there might be something missing since there wouldn’t be a female vocalist but was floored by how the band performed without one. For an encore they played some of their newer songs like “Devil” and “Best Night.” I was also stoked to finally get to hear “A Place Near The City” live which was so so great. Lydia is perfect and if you don’t think so then we’re not friends and we’re officially fighting. No, but really, get yourself out to see this tour. Consider it an investment. Dates are here.
Ah, and if Lydia could do this all again in 4 years when Illuminate turns 10 I’m sure we’d all be just as happy to see this show again.
