Full Show Gallery: Rachael Yamagata at The Varsity Theater
The Varsity Theater; located in the heart of Dinky Town in Minneapolis; is a gorgeous venue. It comes complete with many hanging chandeliers, and a tremendous marque out front with your name in lights.
However, if you’re an extremely intense opening artist and you get totally dialed in by the second song, introduce yourself right off the bat. Sanders Bohlke opened for Rachael Yamagata and brought a strong and deep set, where his guitar was very secondary to his strong voice.
Rachael Yamagata was accompanied by guitarist Michael Chavez and a tremendously attentive audience. She said she uses music and songs to articulate her feelings. As a result, they sound very personal, though not to say it’s a reading of a diary. Rachael’s songs are not exactly uplifting, although she claims to be an eternal optimist and hopeless romantic. Perhaps it’s the less than pleasant life experiences that fill her pen with ink, but I feel like she could write some creative, tongue in cheek songs.
At one point in the show, Rachel was starting a song, and someone in the crowd dropped a plastic cup. Then, they dropped it again…and again. Rachel’s eyes looked up and asked “Seriously?” in a stern tone. It only took a second for her to start laughing. If you enjoy her music, you’ll love her in concert. A mix of musical talent allowing her personality to shine though makes her a must see.
