First spotted as an unknown opener for Opeth and Mastodon last year at Myth Live, Ghost blew me away. I fell in love with the Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath-like Heavy Metal combined with theatrics and a wonderful back story. On top of all of this, no one knows who the hell they are, other than a possible Swedish Metal supergroup… or five nameless ghouls, lead by Papa Emeritus II.

The crowd was on pins and needles in anticipation of Ghost’s arrival on stage. Burning incense at every corner of the stage, and a very active fog machine filled the stage over and over. Eventually the lights fell and the nameless ghouls came onto the stage and broke into the band’s newly released Infestissumam‘s title track with a great intensity! As Infestissumam wound down, all eyes watched the back of the stage for one thing: the arrival of Papa Emeritus II. On stage he came, staff in hand. “Per Aspera Ad Inferi” was the next song, followed by Opus Eponymous’ “Con Clavi Con”.

Ghost is still making a name for themselves stateside, but back in their native Sweden, Infestissumam is in the charts. I did find the songs off of this album much more dynamic and much more exploratory in genres than 2010’s Opus Eponymous which had more grit. It had the same melodic vocals, but more of a metal edge. That being said, the flow of the concert was incredibly solid, weaving between the two albums in seamless fashion.

The night ended with Ghost coming out for one more song: “Monstrance Clock”. “This song is about sex” said Papa Emeritus II in his heavy accent as he asked for crowd participation when it came to singing along, “so I expect you to give it your best effort”. During the song, he withdrew an official Ghost Dild0 which is actually available as part of the Ghost Phallos Mortuus Ritual Box Set, or on it’s own if you don’t need the rest of the box set. This is a twist on the traditional merch table, but certainly not the first musical phallus issued by a band. Rammstein released quite the little box set a few years back. My Google history is going to yield some interesting ads in the coming weeks after that little bit of research.
