On a chilly December night, a very timely all-ages crowd made its way to First Avenue to take in local Hip Hop collective Doomtree. With one major player missing from the lineup, the crew called upon Ander Other to pull the show off.

I’m pretty sure I’m one of the few people in my group of friends that enjoys going to an all ages show at First Ave when a 21+ show is also an option. I’m pretty sure it’s the stone cold sober exuberance that the kids exhibit when they are face to face with their favorite artists. Also, seeing so many going to their first ever concert with their parents. Wide-eyed, excitement, anticipation, and questions about the strange smell of skunk in the air.

The question that was floating around the Main Room before the screen raised was “Do you think P.O.S. (Stef Alexander) will be able to perform tonight?”. Dessa answered the question after “No Way”, saying P.O.S. needed to rest, due to his current condition. As it so happens, Stef was getting set to hit the stage the night before and became ill, and ended up in the hospital. The rest of the crew dug deep and pulled off a monstrous show, including Mike Mictlan who sounded like his voice was shot early on from the previous two shows, but somehow regained more and more of it as the night went on.

After the crew took a 15 minute break in the middle of the show, they came back with a live band on stage. This included Ben Ivascu, Ryan Olson, Isaac Gale, Sean McPherson, Dustin Kiel, Aby Wolf and Linnea Mohn, who all have their hands in one or more bands in Minneapolis. This worked for a number of songs really well, but at times came across as overwhelming.

The biggest surprise to me this year was one Ander Other. He took on the massive task of spitting for Stef in the second set. He did a fantastic job of filling in for his ailing comrade and brought a ton of energy (see photo #8 below). The cohesiveness and wealth of talent in the collective shined brightly, even when P.O.S. was taking a well deserved rest elsewhere.

Speaking of photos, take a look at my gallery from this year’s Blowout VIII (8), located here. Also, please check out Stef’s YouCare Fundraising Page, and if you can, please make a donation.
