Day 3 of Fun Fun Fun Fest was bittersweet. The festival still had loads of tricks up their sleeves: La Dispute, Lagwagon, Explosions in the Sky, and Turbonegro among others were playing. I had just seen La Dispute hours before but I went ahead and made them my first band of the day. Such a fun set to watch. A bit after Japandroids took the stage and let us know they were melting. They told the audience that they have icicle rain where they’re from and asked us to ponder that for a second. Scary. Japandroids came out drenched in water and played a hell of a set. Check these guys out if you haven’t yet. Deerhoof is an excellent band. Very different from most of the sets I caught at Fun Fun Fun Fest but a band I would see again in a heart beat. The Promise Ring was one of those bands that I was looking forward to seeing at the festival. I had recently seen them with The One AM Radio in San Francisco and they killed it again! This band is simply the best. Right after their set I had to run all the way to the other side of the festival to catch Lagwagon. Lagwagon is legendary and put on an awesome show. Beach balls were launched during their set and not only did they kick a few but never skipped a beat of their guitar playing. So cool. Again, after their set I ran back to the other side of the festival to catch locals Explosions in the Sky. These guys were perfect. They were in my top 5 performances of the festival for sure. Finally the moment a lot of folks at the festival were waiting for was here. Turbonegro took the Black Stage to a huge Turbonegro-jean jacket-wearing crowd. I had never seen Turbonegro before but I totally understand what all the hype this weekend was about. Their vocalist has a tiger tattooed on his belly which is super amazing, I mean his belly button was the tiger’s mouth. It is the most magnificent thing. The band, make up and all, put on one of the best sets of the weekend. Fun Fest was an experience I’ll never forget. Hopefully it’s something I can relive to some degree next year. Austin was beautiful to me. It also tanned my extremely pale skin which is something that’s never happened before. Sure, it mostly went away in a week but it was awesome while it lasted. Here are some things I learned during my short time in Texas: the Austin music scene is alive and doing better than you think, it’s hot, biking is definitely the way to go -watch out for cars though, food being launched from a canon is better than anything, it’s queso not cheese, and you probably shouldn’t tell people you don’t really care for BBQ sauce. Also, tacos and kimchi fries forever.
