Review: Poliça – Give You The Ghost (2011)

Poliça is the latest band to come out of the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’ and they are quickly making a mark with their debut album, Give You The Ghost. Originally set to release in February, it seems this one was just too good to keep to themselves and personally, I’m happy they were feeling generous this holiday season.

Comprised of Channy Leaneagh on vocals, Chris Bierden on bass, Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu on drums and produced by Ryan Olson of Gayngs, it is no surprise the group experiments with layering electronic textures, driving percussion and horns through out the record. The result is a whirlwind experience that is sure to grip the listener and have them coming back for more.

In late August, Poliça released two tracks, “Lay Your Cards Out” and “Dark Star.” Both remain signature additions to Give You The Ghost.  Lyrically, they tell a story of strength and moving past an emotional place with conviction, a relatable theme that runs throughout the album.

Dripping in auto-tune, Leaneagh’s vocals compliment the intense beats featured on every song. And although the combo becomes slightly formulaic, it doesn’t mean there is a lack of personality.  “The Maker” takes on a tribal quality while “The Form” feels Latin-inspired. There are also changes in dynamics. For example, “Violent Games” makes you feel as though you’ve been transplanted into the middle of a chase scene. There’s a lot of variety but Give You The Ghost remains a cohesive unit, which I love.

“Wandering Star” emerges as a highlight. Each instrument is introduced thoughtfully and falls away in the same manner, creating a perfect beginning, middle and end. For what it’s worth, I also find myself enjoying this one on repeat for a few cycles. I’m a sucker for a hauntingly beautiful song and this one fits the bill perfectly.

Right around the start of the New Year I get contemplative and make some questionable blogging decisions about promises to re-dedicate myself to yoga and relationships to avoid that are quickly deleted. If you too are in a re-hashing stage (and who isn’t in one way or another?) this could very well become your soundtrack.
