Appropriately enough Maria Taylor decided to start her set at exactly 11:11 PM on 11-11-2011. Many people saw the date and make wishes at the time, Taylor even released an album titled 11:11 in 2005. For fans at the show, it was more than just a wish to get to spend the night with her. Before Taylor and her band took the stage a few men in the audience were discussing their favorite Taylor albums. “No man, Lynn Teeter Flower. That album does things to me.” I’d always thought of her music as more feminine, and sitting there with women, like myself in college after each break up. It was actually very refreshing to see crowds of men discussing her music. Taylor entered the stage with her mobile in hand as she tuned her guitar to keep an eye on the time. With some help from a very anxious man in the audience she started right on time. Personally, I was hoping she would open with a song from the album. Instead she opened with, “Masterplan” the opening track off her new album, Overlook.

Taylor is pretty much the cutest thing ever. She’s kind, soft-spoken and her lyrics are hypnotizing. Her lyrics are heartbreaking, and romantic. During “My Favorite Love”, “Clean Getaway”,  and “Birmingham, 1982”,  the crowd stood so still you could hear a pin drop. That is how commanding her songs are. She picked up the mood after, “It being 11-11-11 and everything let’s play Song Beneath The Song.” (A song from her album, 11:11) No sooner did she hit the chorus did the crowd start a in unison, “It’s not a love, it’s not a love, it’s not a love song.”  For most of the set Taylor played songs from Overlook, but she didn’t let old favorites slip past the new tunes. “This is a song about when I packed up all my shit and moved to California. Do you guys know who Har Mar Superstar is?” I was the only one in the crowd who cheered. I digress. She introduced “LadyLuck” as the song she wrote when she made the drive to California, and Har Mar made them stop in Las Vegas. Taylor revealed that she is about to make another move. This time to Washington D.C. “I gotta try them all out.” she laughed.

You could hardly tell this songbird is a little over three months pregnant. When her sister, Kate said “Are you going to tell them about the new family member?” Taylor gently rubber her belly and said, “Oh yeah, that they know.” Actually, many audience member didn’t know. Congratulations, Maria!! “He likes Masterplan, that first song we did. I feel him moving around a lot when I play that one.”  Her band left the stage for her two song encore which included, “Leap Year”, and “A Clean Getaway”.
