Going to a show at the Cedar is always an experience a little off the beaten path. It’s a place to let your musical tastes take a walk, look around, and find something new that maybe you didn’t know about or never gave a chance. For me, Led to Sea (Riot Act Media) was something I had always appreciated and gave a pretty amazing twist.
Alex Guy and her violin makes up the band. It’s a minimalistic approach to touring until you add in her proficiency with looping and the various ways she grabs sound from the instrument. Plucking the strings, col legno (hitting the strings with the stick of the bow, rather than the hair), traditional bowing and I’m sure a few more that I don’t know or remember the terms for. With all of these variations going on, and Alex’s soft and haunting vocals, it creates very engaging music.
