It was a very exciting night, as three very talented hip hop acts were coming together at the Cedar Cultural center to celebrate No Bird Sings’ CD release. The night was full of angry, inspiring, passionate, thought provoking lines, music of all forms, and an intense amount of emotion.
Kathy Averill; the late Micheal “Eyedea” Larsen was on hand and during No Bird Sing’s set, was brought up on stage. Joe (No Bird Sing) said that she was a rock for everyone performing tonight after the loss of Micheal, when it should be the other way around. Eyedea was found dead on October 16th, 2010 of an accidental drug overdose. This was a big loss to the hip hop and music community alike. Words, tears, and hugs were exchanged; an incredibly moving moment unlike any I had seen before.
No Bird Sing’s new album is named Theft of the Commons and is available on iTunes. Check them out, along with Kill The Vultures and Kristoff Krane, see more of what the Minneapolis Hip Hop scene has to offer. I’m growing more and more impressed with every band I discover.
