Sure, Union South opened to the curiosities and circus from of Montreal, but have you seen the other venue yet? Saturday will give Madisonites a new opportunity when The Felice Brothers come in to fill the expansive, new car smelling
der Rathskeller Part Two…err…The Sett on University of Wisconsin-Madison’s campus. The Felice Brothers spent their beginning band days busking in the New York subway prior to releasing three full lengths. Celebration, Florida will mark their fourth, to be released May 10th, 2011 through Fat Possum. Come for their renown live show, which came upon my ears down at SXSW 2011 while getting coffee via friends and haphazard musician encounters bonding over the band.
Celebration, Florida was recorded in Beacon, New York’s old high school gymnasium and theater to capture their rapscallion folk. Befitting their ‘studio’, the album is written around diverse scenes from the search for a secret paradise to a late night TV host recalling his own success “while traveling in a private jet.” The sound is more a concoction of piano and loosely hitting jazz-influenced drumbeats incorporating an expansive, yet rambunctious gathering of instruments more exciting than what comes to mind in folk music. Prep yourself with their new song, “Ponzi.”
