For over a year now, there has been a side project in the Twin Cities that has been paying homage to the Blues’ greats through tribute-fueled covers and original Delta style Blues songs. Heck; vocalist, harmonica and guitar player Chris Holm has even headed up a celebration of the life and music of Howlin’ Wolf at Lee’s Liquor Lounge and coming soon, a compilation of Robert Johnson songs performed by local artists! Who am I talking about? None other than Minneapolis’ own Fattenin’ Frogs.

On April 8th The Frogs unleashed their self titled CD and it was with great anticipation that I attended the release. Not only do the Frogs put on a lively, soulful, bluesy set with the help of their beautiful all girl backing vocals of the Lilly Pads on a number of songs , but The Black oil Brothers were in town to help them celebrate!

I entered Club Jager to find the place packed to the gills and both bands rippin the place apart with a cover of the The Rolling Stones “Dead Flowers” and Stop Breakin Down Blues. This was followed by another energetic set by the Frogs and the packed house was lovin every note of it.

Be sure to check out their webpage from more information on their album, upcoming Robert Johnson compilation and the second annual Howlin’ Wolf Birthday Party!
