Review: Yelle – Pop-Up (2007)

With a recent tour of the United States, aptly titled C’est l’Amérique Tour, in addition to introducing the Season 4 finale of Entourage, Yelle is on the forefront of French musicians making the jump over the pond to enrapture audiences with enticing electro pop. Yelle first came to be after Je Veux Te Voir (note: Entourage) was tossed up on MySpace only to hit a couple thousand listens in about 48 hours. The response to French rap group TTC‘s sexist Girlfriend stole the wind out from under one of the rappers, Cuizinier, as this rappeusefrom Bretagne thoroughly and lyrically humiliated the rappeur.

Pop-Up (Astralwerks, 2007) mirrors Julie Budet’s (Yelle) interests in fashion and pop parfaitement. Reflecting the bold colors she often adorns, the album is full of bright pop songs infused with the European discothèque electronic ambiance. With the DJ/synths from Tepr (Tanguy Destable) coupled with GrandMarnier‘s production, Pop-Up heralds a melding mix poppy lyrics and provocative topics that make English pop seem apprehensive.

Ce Jeu (This Game) starts it up with a simple bass beat dropping over claps and whistling, innocent but mature as the beat shifts towards electronica before GrandMarnier slips the track back to ramp it up into the single À Cause des Garçons. Yelle delivers rhymes rather than pop lyrics with a heavy rap influence, as on Dans Ta Vraie Vie (In Your Real Life), while keeping her own style without drifting too far towards a single genre.

Track 8: Je Veux Te Voir

By the way, she’s up for a MTVu Woodie this year in America. Additionally, she was supposed to be on Last Call with Carson Daly last night (Nov. 5th), but another comedian came out instead of their performance. Not sure why. The Yelle Carson Daly performance will be November 12th at 1/12:35 EST/CST (Thursday early morning).
